So really, we shouldn't exist.
Our Story
Bad Taste has been created to give a voice specifically to unsigned and independent artists. Let's face it, you're the ones who need the exposure.
A few months ago, I remember scrolling through my Instagram feed and coming across an account called Ones To Watch.
'Amazing!' I thought, 'An account with thousands of followers dedicated to exposing new artists!'
Nope. Every single featured artist on their page seemed to have over 100k followers. It genuinely pissed me off.
I knew there were some great little communities out there for independent artists, especially those which focus on women in music and marginalised communities, but I felt as though there was a space missing that could be filled with advice, reviews, conversations and spotlights exclusively on the unsigned.
As an artist myself, I often find myself in need of a second opinion, another pair of ears. Friends can be great, as well as other musicians you know, but there is always the risk of bias and people generally letting you hear a more flattering assessment than maybe would be helpful. However, it can be expensive to try and send your music off to reviewers and publications. That's why we're here. We look for the good in every piece of art, no matter the genre - but will also provide constructive feedback if we feel it is valuable.
We conduct bi-monthly interviews with independent artists, acting simultaneously as advice columns, informal chats and a chance to get to know some of the best in independent music. Alongside these, we chat to industry professionals, organisations and charities who all offer a unique perspective on the issues facing grassroots music.
Our articles tackle issues such as inequality in the industry, the decline of the local music scene and general commentaries on worldwide music news. Our freelance writers all have experience with performing, writing and existing in music.
Our vision is twofold: lend critique to those who ask for it but also grow a platform for independent artists and for those seeking new, exciting music.
Because it's out there. Come and find it.
