Psychedelic Indie Rock
Soul Bananas, AKA Martim Pocinho, serves up a love letter to those around him he calls friends. The Portuguese artist gives us a psychedelic but hopeful cut here, with a folksy middle section that hits home. Describing his sound as Portugal-meets-Mexico-meets-Manchester, the cross-cultural influences here help to create a fresh flavour. It's sweet and innocent, which is pretty refreshing these days.
Industrial Dance Pop
Cardiff newcomer Eden Mai surprised us all with this debut single, channelling influences like Charli XCX and Poppy. Mai, however, is creating her own sound here with a really alluring and catchy dance track. It's sugary and sensual, with whispered vocals and fuzzed-out percussive breaks. The production is standout and we're looking forward to more in 2023.
Alternative Pop
One of the strongest tracks we've heard this year, and one we've been spinning a lot, Yasmin Coe's ear for a pop hook is evident here. The guitar riff has an early-80s post-punk vibe but this is just a banger of a 20s pop song. The backing vocals are luscious and uplifting, despite the song being a little sad in terms of subject matter. A solid, solid offering from the Manchester singer-songwriter.
Spoken Word/Rap
An honest and raw offering from Birmingham-based artist The New Consistent. After 'Caught In The Draft' caught our attention, we were on the lookout for any upcoming projects and this one doesn't disappoint. The laidback delivery returns, this time with a softer edge. There's a sadness to the track, with TNC struggling with the idea of letting family down and his own dark thoughts.
