Review: Where It Breaks

My Only Solution bring fresh flavours to a classic alternative sound with their latest single.

Hailing from the North West of England, My Only Solution are bringing a level of soulfulness and maturity that is far beyond their youthful appearance and small size as a band. Their most recent release in December came in the form of new single Where It Breaks, and this song feels like a callback to the heart-wrenching power of the best of 90’s grunge mixed with the melancholic balladry of progressive bands like Pink Floyd, with a generous dose of emotive power from more recent scenes like emo and post-hardcore. Coming off of the back of their debut album in July, Violent Delights Have Violent Ends, the three piece are showing no signs of taking their foot off the gas and have instead chosen to provide us, their listeners, with a seriously powerful new track.

Lyrically, it’s quite ambiguous and frankly this only helps the band reach further into the listener’s mind and pluck at their heartstrings that much more effectively. By keeping this level of ambiguity, the song’s lyrics can be applied very well to many situations, and yet still feel equally as poignant and painful. It appears the line that is so notoriously hard to tread has not only been found by the band. It's an excellent release and shows a level of songwriting ability often displayed by many bands at much later stages in their careers. This group have, in one fell swoop, kept the listeners they had thirsting for more excellent music, whilst also hopefully collecting many more new fans. Just from my listens on Spotify I can imagine how agonising this would be to hear live, and it’s something I genuinely look forward to experiencing.

There are shades of fellow North West alt-rockers Ruby Tuesdays, but MOS lean a little heavier into some grunge elements. Adding their sound to the growing Northern alternative scene, the band power their way through here. Definitely for fans of music of the heavier persuasion - and sweaty live music, by the sounds of it.

If you haven’t already, go have a listen.
