Review 'Soft Focus'

Updated: Feb 21

Two of the best doing it in lowfi pop at the minute come together for a three minute banger.

Along with the likes of contemporaries Clairo and Sophie Meiers, Lazygirl's bedroom pop aesthetic has enjoyed a surge in popularity recently. Helped by the availability of home studio setups and an abundance of enormous talent, Spotify editorial playlists are flooded now with artists flaunting a similar style. Within the general noise, however, can be heard some little gems. Here, Tonia and Lazygirl provide us with nothing short of an excellent bedroom-pop bop. Try saying that ten times faster.

As with the artists mentioned, there are no sacrifices made when it comes to the quality of the production. The track is quite nice and warm, with some washy synths and a crackling vinyl sound underneath the vocals before it kicks into a strong and catchy chorus. The pair exchange verses and although we'd say their vocal styles are quite similar, they blend effectively and give the sense that the narrative of the song is shared by both, the two standing side by side in the story.

Although there is sometimes a risk of tracks within this genre dipping into sickly sweetness, the song is pretty groovy and, more importantly, both singers let their personalities shine through with the help of some fun backing vocals. That element of shimmering production bolsters the backing vocals' responses in the chorus, letting the singers float along these sections at the pulsing tempo set by the drum machines.

Overall, it's a solid pop banger carried by the strength of the vocal melody and performances. The instrumentation, while not mind-blowing, suits the simplicity of the track and really just allows you to focus on the two featured artists as they show their chemistry, bonded by this story of worry and doubt in a relationship.

Also, we challenge you not to want to move during that chorus.
